This presentation explores foundational concepts of language acquisition and examines key considerations when developing educational support for newcomer students with suspected disabilities. We will discuss common beliefs about multilingual learners with language-based disabilities. This session emphasizes the importance of effective team collaboration strategies and the thoughtful selection of tools and methods for gathering meaningful data. Practical strategies will be shared to support collaboration among families, educators, and communities in order to design and implement effective, inclusive interventions.
Korah La Serna Guilar is a certified bilingual school psychologist. She provides culturally responsive and neurodivergent-affirming assessments and educational support to culturally, linguistically and neuro-diverse learners. Her 20+ year career experience includes working as a district employee and independent contractor for multiple Northern California k-12 schools. She has served monolingual and multilingual students across public and private school settings. Her previous work experience also includes administrative positions such as Director of Special Education & Student Services and, more recently, Director of Health & Wellness. While the majority of her work involves working directly with children, she is also a published researcher and teaches strength-based and bilingual assessment to school psychology graduate students at CSUS. Above all, she is an advocate for learners of all ages
