Crossing Borders, Confronting Bias – The Role of Psychology in Combatting Hate Victimization
Webinar in englischer Sprache - veranstaltet von: International Council of Psychologists (ICP)
Speaker: Hanlie Van Wyk
The global community is experiencing an alarming rise in hate and violence directed towards individuals based on race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, or other aspects of their identity. The field of psychology can actively strive to foster community cohesion and enhance the welfare of societies, communities, and individuals. Collectively, psychologists can make valuable contributions to counter and combat hate victimisation, challenging and disrupting the discourse of prejudice and intolerance that underlies hate victimization.
Speaker Bio: Hanlie is inspired by Nelson Mandela's quote "People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love". Her work as a global consultant focuses on fostering inclusive and just communities, societies, and workplaces. Her areas of research include hate victimization focusing on the need for multidisciplinary, interdisciplinarity, and transnational work developing globally relevant guidelines, and responding to real-world problems. As a founding member of the Hate Crimes Working Group, she contributed to research that culminated in the signing of a Hate Crimes Bill by the president of South Africa. In the last decade, she has presented her research in numerous countries and co-authored several academic articles and contributed to a report for the UNODC. Her PhD is in the process of comparing a sample of countries in the Global South to those in the Global North.
